Introduction

Career planning is the process of gathering information about yourself including interests, personality, talents/strengths and work values.  Knowing yourself better will help you define your future. For instance, here are some questions for you to consider:

Do you take orders well or do you feel the need to be in
     charge?

Do you enjoy working with people or prefer to work alone?

Would you work well in an outdoor sales position or would
you prefer a more structured environment?

This web quest will guide you through a series of tasks that will culminate in a better understanding of yourself and how that knowledge becomes a basis for a choice of college and a career direction.

The Task

You are a police detective that has been given the job of finding a lost person (you). Various clues will be provided and you need to use that information so you will find yourself.

You will need to use the software program Bridges that has been installed on this computer.

Complete all the assignments by making good use of class time and being serious in answering the questions.  Be totally open minded and do not think of any one career you may want now when answering the questions. People often need to change careers or your interests change as you grow older so do not limit your opportunities.

The Process

You will complete all steps individually.

  • Open the Bridges Program.
  • Complete the Interest Profiler and print a copy of the results.
  • Complete the Skills Checklist- (Transferable Work Content Skills) and print a copy.
  • Complete the Work Importance Locator and print a copy.
  • Go to the Occupations section of the program. Using your results from the previous two assignments, make a list of 5 occupations that combine the major components of your results from the printouts. Note the education required for those occupations.
  • Go to the Search section and make a list of 10 colleges that have a major for each occupation you have chosen.
  • Click on  “What Should I Consider in Choosing a College?”. Print a copy, and answer the questions. Review and reflect on your answers in order to complete the next section.
  • Go back to the Search section. Find each of your 10 colleges you previously identified and create a checklist form so each of those colleges is listed vertically on top with each question numbered down the page. After checking whether each college satisfies your choices, identify in rank order the colleges that most meet your requirements.

Conclusion

At the completion of this project, students will have determined a career direction based on the the self analysis information they provided.  They will also know what that career requires and what they need to do to accomplish that goal. The next step for each student would be to make an appointment with their guidance counselor to review the results and set a plan.
