Introduction

This webquest will take you on an information hunt to learn about the people who celebrated the first Thanksgiving in the New World. As you progress through this activity you will tour their ship, the Mayflower, spend time at a replica of Plimoth Plantation in 1627, view interviews with historic people and see original documents. As you visit these different sites, you will answer questions, complete diagrams and charts, and take notes about important details and interesting facts. These notes will be used to add realism as you write 2 letters home to those left behind in England. The contents of these letters should demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the life of a Pilgrim.

The Task
You will visit different web sites and gather enough information to write two letters to the people back home in England.
The Process
1. The first thing you need to do is understand who the pilgrims were and why they made this journey. To do this read the first paragraph in this article about the Pilgrims and answer the following question. For what reasons did the Pilgrims journey to the New World?
2The second thing is to gather information. You will accomplish this by visiting the following sites. Be sure to take notes so you will be able to use this information in your letters.
* life aboard the Mayflower
* interview with Desire Minton
* girls on the Mayflower
3. The Mayflower had 3 different groups of people with different lifestyles and values. When they landed, they created a set of rules that everyone agreed upon. This would guarantee that everyone would be treated equally. The Mayflower Compact was the first agreement for self-government in America.
*Read the  Mayflower Compact and the History Behind The Mayflower to answer the next two questions.
What was the main reason for creating this document?
Why do you think it was important that every man on board sign the agreement?
4. Why was the Meeting House important?
*Complete a Venn Diagram to  Compare and Contrast the lives of a Pilgrim Child and a Wampanoag.

Evaluation

You will write two letters to England as one of the Pilgrims writing to their family. The first letter will be about your trip on the Mayflower right after you have landed. It needs to include what the living conditions are and how you spend your time while on board. Also include what the passengers had to sign before they left the ship.
The second letter will be about living on Plimoth Plantation. Include descriptions of the local natives and compare and contrast the similarities and differences between your pilgrim life and the Wampanoag child during this time period.
Finally check out how much you have learned by playing Thanksgiving Cyber Challenge
