Introduction

There are 26 letters in the alphabet, and each one has two ways to look: the UPPERCASE way and the lowercase way.

What are the special letters in your name and what do they look like as UPPERCASE letters? What do they look like as lowercase letters?

What words begin with the letters in your name?

Get yourself ready because you are about to go on a letter hunt!

Happy Hunting!

The Task

You have 4 tasks to complete:

1.    Your first task will be to explore the letters of the alphabet.

2.    Your second task will be to hunt for all the special letters in your name and print out a letter page for each one.

3.    Your third task will be to hunt for words that begin with each letter in your name. You will find an animal word, a food word, a dinosaur word, and other words for each of your special letters.

4.     Your fourth task will be to take what you have found and put it all together to make an accordion-style book entitled, “My Special Letters.”

The Process

You have been talking about the letters of the alphabet in your classroom. You have been reading books about the alphabet in your classroom. It’s time to explore the alphabet some more. You can do this by yourself or with a classmate. If you are with a classmate, remember to take turns as you go through each task.

Task # 1

Your first task is to explore the letters of the alphabet. Your job is to visit each of the websites below to see a slide show of the alphabet and hear the alphabet song. Feel free to sing along!

Click on the dancing letters to explore the alphabet.

What a great song! Did you see any of your special letters?

Task # 2

Your second task is to hunt for and print the very special letters that make up your name. You need to print a letter page for each letter even if you have two or more of the same letter in your name. When you are done, you should be able to lay the letter pages on the table so they spell your name.

Go to the web site below to find your special letters. If you are not sure what they look like, get your classroom name card to help you. Click on one letter at a time, print it, click the back button, and then find the next letter and print it. Keep going until you can spell your name with the letter pages.

Click on the letter S to go to the letter pages.

If you can spell your name by laying out your letter pages, then you are ready to color. Color your special letters and the picture that begins with it. Do not color above or below the lines. You will need that space for the next task!

Task # 3

Your third task is to go on a word hunt to find words that begin with the letters in your name and copy them down. The letter pages that you just printed are your recording sheets. You will find animal words, food words, dinosaur words, and other words.

What animal words begin with the letters in your name? Go to the web site below, find your special letters, click on them, and see the animals. As you see each animal, copy the name of the animal onto the letter page that the animal begins with. Use the space above and below your special letters. Copy down one animal word on each letter page. Draw a picture of each animal next to its word.

Click on the cat for animal words.

What food words begin with the letters in your name? Go to the web site below, find your special letters, click on them, and see the foods. There might be more than one food hiding under each letter, so click a few times to pick the one you want. After you pick a food, copy the name of the food onto the letter page that the food begins with. Copy down one food word on each letter page. Draw a picture of each food next to its word.

Click on the orange for food words.

http://www.jayzeebear.com/abc/food/abc.html

What dinosaur words begin with the letters in your name? Go to the web site below, find your special letters, click on them, and see the dinosaurs. As you see each dinosaur, copy the name of the dinosaur onto the letter page that the dinosaur begins with. Copy down one dinosaur word on each letter page. Draw a picture of each dinosaur next to its word.

Click on the dinosaur for dinosaur words.

Now collect some more words. The next web site will have a few words for each letter. Just click on the buttons that have your special letters and copy the words on your letter pages. If you already have the word, you don’t need to copy it down again. Just copy the new words. Draw a picture of each object next to its word.

Click on the flag for other words.

Wow! Look at all the words you found! You are ready for the next task.

Task # 4

Your fourth task is to take what you have found and put it all together into an accordion-style book entitled, “My Special Letters.”

First, make the cover of your book by clicking on the link below and printing a copy of the cover. Write your name after the word, “by.” Draw a picture of yourself under the title.

Click on the book for the book cover.

Second, lay out the letter pages side by side so that they spell your name. Put the cover page first in line before your first letter.

Third, tape the edges that are next to each other so it looks like one very long rectangle.

Fourth, fold the pages like an accordion.

Now your book is ready for reading. Find a classmate who is also ready for reading and take turns reading to each other. It’s fun to learn about other people’s special letters, too. Do you and your classmates use any of the same special letters!?
