Ms. Littlewood, Principal

Mr. O'Connell, Asst. Principal

Thank you for participating in our parent conferences.  It was nice to see so many families involved in their child’s education and academic growth.  Should you have further concerns regarding your child’s progress please remember that teachers and staff are available throughout the school year and welcome any questions you may have.

Again, we would like to remind parents to help your children make appropriate choices for school attire.  Students will be outside during the school day for recess.  They need to be dressed appropriately.  Weather can change drastically throughout the day.  Make sure your child is prepared.  We will not send a child outside if we deem that they are not adequately prepared for weather conditions.  In addition, please remember to label all clothing with your child’s name.

Our sidewalk project is on hold until the spring when the kindergarten entrance will be completed.  Thank you Monty Tech students for your hard work, the sidewalk looks great!

We have had many wonderful volunteers help us this last month with various tasks from shelving books in the library to assisting our school nurse as well as helping teachers in the classrooms.   Thank you for your time and effort.  If you would like

more information about helping us here at Memorial School, please call 297-1305 Ex. 324.

Our new parent pick-up and drop-off procedures have been implemented.  This has reduced foot traffic and congestion in and around Memorial School improving safety during our busy dismissal and arrival times.  When picking your child up at school make sure your visor sign is visible. Be aware that the parent pick-up line starts at the high school and pulls down to Memorial School when all busses have pulled in front of Memorial School.  During drop-off parents are required to drop off their child at this new location from 8:30-8:50.  If you require a visor sign for your car and utilize the parent pick-up regularly, please contact the school.  Thank you for your cooperation.

The YMCA before and after day care is a big success. A special thank you to Mike, Peter, and Artie.  The daycare is available 6:30am until 6:00pm.  If you would like more information you may call the Clark Memorial YMCA at 297-0869.

In the event of school cancellation you will be called via our new Global Connect phone system if you have provided us with an updated phone number.  It is very important to contact the school if any of your phone numbers have changed.  Parents will also be notified through radio, television stations as well as the fire station whistles.

                            Happy Holidays!

I want to thank all the students and families who donated to the Memorial School Food Drive.  Once again it was a success, and we raised over 1400 food items to give away to our Memorial School families.  If you are a family in need of help, or know of a family that would benefit from our food drive, please contact me at 297-1305 Ex. 317.

November flew by as the students focused on “RESPONSIBILITY”, and several students received an award at our recognition assembly. For the month of December students will be learning about “KINDNESS” and “CARING”.  Students “caught in the act of kindness” will receive a “kindness mitten” that will be displayed in the foyer and cafeteria at school.  Parents can help out by reinforcing what it means to be kind, show compassion and empathy.  Acknowledge children when they have done something positive or when they have helped a friend for family member.

I would like to thank the PTO for sponsoring the “BULLYING” assembly that was presented to the school in November.  Students learned how to identify a bully, what to do if they are being bullied, and the difference between “tattling” and “telling”.

Lastly, I would like congratulate the students who won a bike during our bike raffle.  The following students were:  Jeremiah Moulton, Jasmine Scott, Elis Peterson, Reagyn Golden, Thomas Porter, Kylee Alden, Collin Aker, Gabriella Cote, Sidney Brewer, Hannah Turner, and Jessie Nolette.  Several of the bikes were too big for our students, so they were donated to Toy Town Elementary.  A BIG “Thank You” to the Needham Public School system for donating the bikes to our students.

Occupational Therapy

During our recent professional development day, the OT department enjoyed learning about a program called “Alphabet Fitness”.  I would like to share this information with families.  The program was designed by Wellness, Inc. from Boston MA.  The strategy of the program is… “to develop a fun, fitness-oriented approach to early learning for kids”.  The vision of the program is… “to improve children’s long term well-being by making language and communication skills part of their stronger gross-motor intelligence”.

Alphabet Fitness benefits include:

  • Prepares the brain and body for learning accuracy
  • Links language to fitness
  • Decreases alphabet-linked learning difficulties and motor restrictions
  • Instills cooperative learning habits

If you would like to learn more about this fun program, check out their website:

Kindergarten News

Kindergarten students will be launching their new ELA theme, “Friends Together,” next week.  During the next three weeks, children will be engaged in reading, writing, science and social studies activities pertaining to friendship.

Just another reminder…please dress your child appropriately for the weather…layers are best!

Please remember to pack your child a hat and mittens/gloves to keep them warm.  It is also important to LABEL EVERYTHING!

1st Grade

It’s been a busy time in First Grade! Children have begun the second theme, “Surprise!” in reading. Get ready for more high frequency words to be added to your child’s Reading Bag! We hope that all children are finding fun ways to practice these words. Building them with their letter cards or using them in sentences is just a couple of ways to practice.  In addition children should be rereading their take home Phonics Library stories as well as enjoying other books you may have in your home.

In math children have also taken home a Math Facts Bag to start home practice of fact cards. Look for more to come. Each set will follow a special math strategy for addition or subtraction. We have begun counting money using nickels and pennies and soon will be adding dimes to our coin collections. Telling time on the hour and next, on the half hour will also be added to our math lessons. First graders have learned many games to practice these skills.

Our students are very excited because we have started practicing for a holiday program with our music teacher Mr. Whitham.

Greetings from Grade 2

November was Nature Study Time!

Second graders have now begun our newest reading theme entitled “Nature Walk”.  In this theme, the stories focus on nature and taking care of it.  Shortly, each student will be asked to explore nature in their neighborhood and bring in an item which they feel is a special part of nature to share with their classmates.  We will be using them to write descriptive paragraphs.

Second graders should also be practicing addition and subtraction facts each evening.

Please remind your child to wear clothing that is appropriate for the seasonal weather.  We do go outside each day and at this time of the year the weather can be unpredictable.

3rd Grade

It was great to see you all at Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Thank you for your continued support of us, and for all you do to help your child succeed in school.

In November, the boys and girls in third grade learned about different types of traditions in their anthology.  To go along with the traditions theme, third graders read Molly’s Pilgrim, a story about a Russian girl who came to America for freedom.  Students learned about modern day Pilgrims and then did a project involving where their ancestors came from.  Students had to make a doll that was dressed like their ancestors.

The end of the traditions theme focuses on Trickster Tales.  Your child will be reading different tales from their anthology and then writing a Trickster tale of their own.  Students will also continue learning test taking strategies and how to read for information.

In third grade we are well under way with multiplication, having finished unit 4.  Please keep reviewing those facts at home.  Many classes are reciting count bys which can be very helpful with multiplication.  Also, there are numerous websites that have games and can even make flashcards for you, just type in “multiplication” in your favorite search engine.  In unit 5, students will be introduced to reading and writing 3-digit decimals, and reviewing place value in numbers.

The Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrims made their way into third grade, as students learned about these first people of Massachusetts.

I bet if you ask them, your child could tell you a few facts you might not know.
